SOS and ANSC Plan Massive Voter Registration and Education Campaign to begin August 6, 53rd Anniversary of the 1965 Voting Rights Act

The Save Ourselves Coalition for Justice and Democracy (SOS) and the Alabama New South Coalition (ANSC) announce a massive voter registration and education campaign to begin Monday August 6, the 53rd. Anniversary of the passage of the 1965 Voting Rights Act. “One of our goals,” said Senator Hank Sanders of Selma, “is to register, organize and educate voters in Alabama in the 90 days that remain before the November 6, 2018 General Election to get out and vote. We hope to surpass the turnout of especially African-American voters in the rural Black Belt counties and inner city neighborhoods, beyond the numbers we achieved in the December 2107 Special Election, which elected Doug Jones as U. S. Senator” SOS and ANSC plan to revive and refashion the “Vote or Die Campaign” used to awaken voters in the Special Election, to reawaken, organize and educate them for the November General Election. The “Vote or Die Campaign” was to shock people to think about the consequences to their health, education, daily livelihoods, and quality of life if they did not vote.“The same critical conditions and life-or-death decisions remain facing the voters in Alabama for the November election,” said Faye Rose Toure, leader of the Vote or Die Campaign. “In talking with first time voters and voters who did not vote, we learned that fear is a factor keeping, especially poor people, away from the polls.” People who have been previously incarcerated or those who receive SNAP and other government benefits are scared to vote for fear of losing benefits or being arrested again. John Zippert, ANSC President said, “ The Vote-or Die Campaign will concentrate on registering new voters before the October 22, 2018 deadline to register. We will also work with previously incarcerated people, who did not commit crimes of moral turpitude to restore their voting rights. And most importantly we will organize and educate voters, from the precinct level to prepare and participate in the upcoming November General Election. We will concentrate our efforts in Selma, Montgomery, Birmingham, Mobile, Huntsville and Greene and surrounding Black Belt rural counties, and we invite others to join us in extending this voter awareness effort to other parts of the state.” Hank Sanders said, “We begin our Vote or Die Campaign on August 6, 2018, to commemorate and continue the impact of the 1965 Voting Rights Act despite efforts to destroy the effectiveness of the VRA and suppress the vote in various underhanded ways.” The National Voting Rights Museum in Selma is sponsoring a contest and giving prizes to the local community organization who register the most people each month between now and the Octobeer 22nd deadline. SOS, ANSC and other associated partnering organizations plan many meetings and activities over the next ninety days to actualize the potentials and realize the goals of the Vote or Die Campaign in Alabama.
