The Greene County Commission met in regular session, Monday, July 8, 2024 with all Commissioners present. As discussed in the Commission’s work session, Wednesday, July 3, Attorney Mark Parnell presented a Resolution which allowed the Commission to enlarge the board of directors of the Greene County Water and Sewer Authority from three to five members. The approved Resolution also stated that the Commission is the appointing authority for said directors, and it will be the policy of the Commission to appoint directors to the Authority so that each director will reside in each Commission district.
The three board members currently serving on the Water and Sewer Authority represent Districts 1, 3 and 4. The Commission approved the appointment of Andre Woods from District 2 to serve on the board, as recommended by Commissioner Tennyson Smith. Commissioner Roshanda Summerville moved to table her appointment from District 5. The Commission agreed.
In other business the Commission acted on the following:
* Approved the request from Judge Lillie Osborne to place a Key Pad on the District Judges’s offices.
* Approved the contract with Cook Pest Control, with the initial service costing $180 and monthly services costing $85.
Approved replacing up to five HVAC Units in the county courthouse facility.
* Approved the financial reports and payment of claims for the period ending June 30, 2024, as presented by CFO Macaroy Underwood in the following: Accounts Payable totaled $353,618.92; Payroll Transfer totaled $298,124.79; Fiduciary totaled $76,969.55; Electronic Claims paid totaled $70,648.10. Citizen Trust Bank unrestricted funds totaled $2,980,810.15; restricted funds totaled $4,019,473.37. Merchant & Farmers Bank unrestricted funds (bingo funds) totaled $3,089,684.04; restricted funds totaled $1,589,214.19. Investments totaled $897,970.63.

Alabama New South Alliance endorses candidates for the August 25th municipal elections
Sandra Walker The Alabama New South Alliance (ANSA) met on Sunday afternoon to endorse candidates in the upcoming August 25th municipal elections in Eutaw and Forkland, Alabama.
Carol Zippert, Greene County chapter chairperson, welcomed the 30 ANSA members who partciapated in the screening. “I sent letters to every municipal candidate, in contested races, to attend the screening and decide on these endorsements.”
Judge Lillie Osborne, chair of the ANSA endorsement committee, explained the endorsement process. Each mayoral candidate was given 15 minutes, 3 minutes of introductory remarks and 12 minutes of questions, while council candidates were given 10 minutes, 2 minutes for opening remarks and 8 minutes of questions.
ANSA endorsed Sandra Walker for Mayor of Eutaw. She and two of her opponents, Latasha Johnson and Joe Lee Powell, attended the screening, however, incumbent Mayor Raymond Steele and Queena Bennett Whitehead did not attend to answer voter’s questions.
For Mayor of Forkland, the ANSA endorsed incumbent Charlie McAlpine, over his opponent Michael Barton, who did not attend the screening.
For the City of Eutaw, ANSA endorsed Valerie Watkins for City Council District 1. Opponent Ke’Undra Q. Cox attended the screening but Chandra Mayes did not.
For City of Eutaw, District 2, ANSA endorsed incumbent La’Jeffrey Carpenter over his opponent Bryant N. Snyder Jr., who both attended the screening and competed for the endorsement. The City Council District 3 seat is uncontested with Tracy Hunter, as the sole candidate who qualified.
Incumbent District 4 City Council member, Sheila H. Smith, was endorsed by ANSA. Her opponent Larry Coleman did not attend the screening.
For Eutaw City Council, District 5, the ANSA endorsed Rodney Wesley. His opponent Jaqueline Stewart did not attend the screening.
ANSA will publish a sample ballot with its endorsements to be distributed to the voters before the election and at the polls.
ANSA is the sister organization to the Alabama New South Coalition (ANSC) which is a statewide predominately Black and progressive social justice organization .
ANSC works year-round on civil rights and social justice issues such as Medicaid Expansion, police reform, voter suppression and other issues. Membership is open to the public at $30 a year – $25 for the state and $5 for the local chapter. Greene County Alabama New South Coalition donates $5,000 to Greene County Health System

The Greene County Chapter of the Alabama New South Coalition donated $5,000 raised at its recent ‘Black and White Heritage Ball ’ and related grassroots fundraising to the Greene County Health System.
Carol P. Zippert, ANSC Chapter President said, “ This donation is in keeping with our ANSC motto, ‘A Change for the Better in Our Lifetime’ and we hope this will encourage other community organizations, businesses and institutions to support the hospital and help to keep it open for the use of Greene County residents.”
Dr. Pugh, GCHS CEO said, “ We really appreciate this contribution from ANSC and will put it to good use in improving our health services.”
