Terri Sewell and Shomari Figures elected to Congress Trump wins State of Alabama and nationwide; But Kamala Harris wins Greene County

Donald Trump and J. D. Vance have been elected President and Vice President of the United States in yesterday’s General Election. Trump carried the State of Alabama with 1, 545,170 (65%) to 767,200 (35%) for Kamala Harris.

Trump increased his statewide vote in Alabama from 62% to 65% ,around 10,800 more votes, while Harris finished with 82,000 votes less than Biden received n 2020.

In Greene County, Kamala Harris received 3,131 (77.56%) votes to 885 (21.92%) for Trump. Robert Kennedy received 14 votes, less than 1%.

There was a total of 4,054 votes cast in Greene County which is a 55% turnout or better. Most of the Alabama Black Belt counties supported Kamala Harris by varying degrees.

In the Alabama District 7 Congressional race, Terri Sewell was re-elected to an eighth term in Washington. In Greene County, Terri Sewell received 3,213 (80.51%) votes to 777 (19.47%) for her Republican opponent Robin Litaker .

In the new Alabama 2nd. Congressional District, Shomari Figures, the Democrat, defeated Caroleene Dobson, the Republican, by 157,092 (54.6%) to 130,847 (45.4%). This flip from a Republican to a Democrat may help the Democrats nationally to control the House of Representatives. The new Congressional district was drawn after a protract3d five-year battle of litigation which went to the Supreme Court to get more equitable representation for the 27% of Alabama’s population that is African American.

Republicans were successful statewide in electing Supreme Court and other appellate judges.

The Statewide Amendment allowing the Franklin County Board of Education to sell land it owns in adjoining counties was approved by a vote of 1,189 (57%) to 902 (43%) in Greene County. This amendment was passed statewide by 77% of voters

In Greene County several local officials including Rolanda Wedgeworth, Probate Judge, Veronica Morton-Jones, for Circuit Clerk and Gregory S. Griggers, Circuit Judge for the 17th Judicial Circuit, serving Greene, Sumter and Marengo Counties, were elected without opposition.
