Eutaw City Council certifies election results Runoff for District 4, between French and Brewer

At Noon on Tuesday, September 3, 2025, the Eutaw City Council met to certify the election results for the August 26th municipal election.
There were three provisional ballots, approved by the Board of Registrars, all in District 1, which were counted and added to the unofficial results available on election night. The three provisional ballots all voted for incumbent Mayor Latasha Johnson and Councilwoman Valerie Watkins, adding three votes to their totals.
The final results for Mayor were Corey Cockrell – 508 votes, Latasha Johnson – 414 and Tyrone Atkins – 64 . Corey Cockrell will be the new Mayor. He and the new Council take office on November 1, 2025.
In the City Council races, for District 1, Valerie Watkins defeated KeUndra Cox by 97 to 93. In District 2, Jonathan Woodruff won with 123 votes, over Charles Naylor with 35 votes and Maurice Walton with 43. In District 3, Tracie Hunter was unopposed and re-elected for a second term. In District 5, Carrie Logan received 122 and defeated incumbent Suzette Powell with 86 votes.
In District 4, there will be a runoff election on Tuesday September 23, 2025, between Lorenzo French and Sarah Duncan Brewer. French led with 83 votes, followed by Brewer with 47 and incumbent Larrie Coleman with 37. French was two votes short of the number of votes to win outright in the first round. There will be a costly runoff for the city in District 4 only, unless Ms. Brewer concedes. Applications for Absentee Ballots are already available in this runoff contest.
At the certification meeting, John Zippert, Co-Publisher of the Democrat and a poll official, asked why the 16 persons who voted absentee, whose ballots were not properly witnessed or notarized, could not be notified of their mistake, which resulted in their ballot not being counted. He was told that this is against the Secretary of State’s rules and regulations. Zippert was not raising this issue to contest the election but to help people to learn the absentee ballot process and make sure their vote counted.
