Alabama New South Coalition (ANSC) held its fall Membership Convention Saturday, September 26, 2026, at the RSA Activity Center, downtown Montgomery, AL. A key component of the Convention was the selection of ANSC State Officers. The ANSC Nominating Committee presented a slate of candidates and opened the floor for other nominations.
The ANSC members unanimously approved the following State Officers: President Vivian Figures, Alabama Senator, Mobile County; 1st Vice-President, Garria Spencer, County Commissioner Greene County; 2nd Vice-President, KC Crusoe, Mobile County; Treasurer, Sharon Calhoun, Montgomery County; Recording/Corresponding Secretary, Eva Prewitt, Tuscaloosa County.
The ANSC State Officers serve a two-year term and could be eligible for re-election.
The Theme for the Fall Convention was Building Bridges, Not Walls: Our Path to Freedom. The luncheon speaker was the Honorable Kristen Clarke, Former Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights and now Current General Counsel of the NAACP.
The Alabama New South Coalition (ANSC) was officially founded on January 25, 1986 in Birmingham. Citizens came from across Alabama to its organizing convention and voted unanimously to establish the organization. The purpose of the Alabama New South Coalition is to promote the general welfare of all people through independent focused organizations dedicated to progressive ideals of freedom, justice and democracy. Our specific objectives are to effect solutions to social, economic and community problems by constructively promoting:
- Community Focused Organization
- Voter Registration and Education
- Economic Development
- Cultural Awareness
- Leadership Development
- Youth Development
- Progressive Legislation
- and to coalesce and assist organizations with similar objectives.
