Eutaw City Hall met for a regular session on Tuesday, May 12. With approval of the minutes from April 27th, there was no old business to address. Councilwoman Valerie Watkins was absent from the session.

The new business items are as follows:

  1. The Proclamation for DHR Foster Child month was tabled since City Hall did not receive the document
  2. Bids were opened for the City Hall and R.H. Young Community Center roofs. Only one bid was made by Duratec Roofing Solutions for $358,700 regarding the R.H. Young Community roof
  3. Approval of the Contract between City of Eutaw Water Department and CNI Solutions for CNI Billing Management Services and Maintenance Support. This will involve procuring card readers so that payments can be made directly without a third party.
  4. Approval of the Contract between City of Eutaw Water Department and Nextbillpay: Customer Portal Utility Bill System
  5. Approval for advertisement for a City Clerk
  6. Approval of Payment of Bills

Mayor Cockrell began his report by updating citizens that a lot of leaks around the city were being fixed and encouraged attendees to take pride in their homes by not littering. He also encouraged citizens to come to City Hall regarding delinquent and late water billing before May 31st to avoid water shut offs. The water billing system is imperative as it encompasses funds for sewage and garbage disposal as well. Currently, operations for garbage disposal alone exceed $20,000. “The city will go broke if people do not pay the bill,” the mayor cautioned.

Council member comments also detailed progress being made in the city and surrounding areas. Councilman Woodruff asked citizens to visit the town of Boligee for GED and CNA classes sponsored by Wallace Community College, citing Karen Lewis as the point of contact for the programs. Councilwoman Tracey Hunter reported that “There will be no more brown water in Branch Heights,” due to flushing stations being installed. Councilwoman Carrie Logan reminded citizens about the new Story Walk in the United Memorial Park, reported a successful BBQ cook off, and announced that grants were received for a fireworks show.

After the conclusion of council member comments, newly inducted Officer Raymond Lewis came to thank everyone for their support on his journey to and through the police academy. “We taught him law, we taught him discipline, we taught him ethics,” commented Chief Kendrick Powell.

The next regular session is scheduled to be held on Tuesday, May 26th at 5:00pm.
