As early as 1846, two years before the first women’s rights convention in America at Seneca Falls, NY, this academy had been established in Greene County, AL where women could pursue the study of Latin, French, and art through its academic department. In 1889, the Mesopotamia Female Seminary was disassembled and moved to a central location in Eutaw at the corner of Wilson Avenue and Main Street, where it continued to serve as an educational center for females. The building subsequently served as an extension campus for Miles College, an HBCU, in Eutaw; making the historic structure a progressive educational icon for gender and racial equality in America.
The Greene County Commission recently deeded the structure to the Greene County Historical Society, who are committed to restoring its historical features and saving this national treasure of the equal rights movement. The first phase is replacement of the failing roof. An AI developed rendition of the restored structure compared to its current state is shown below.

Suggested uses of the restored structure include: 1) a civic center that can serve as a large event venue, 2). a museum highlighting the progressive history of Greene County toward gender and racial equality, 3). a Veteran’s center highlighting the role of Greene County citizens who have defended the liberty of America in every major conflict from the Revolutionary War through recent conflicts, 4). a repository of historic documents and records pertaining to the rich history of Greene County, and 5). an inclusive center that does all of the above. We invite you to tell us your ideas of possible uses!
