  • Greene County Career Center receives National JAG Award and state program improvement grant

    The Greene County Board of Education met in regular session, Monday August 19, 2024 with all members present. In his opening statements, Superintendent Dr. Corey Jones noted that the opening of schools went well. In spite of the delay due to renovations, Robert Brown Middle School scholars are back on track.
    In his positive news reports, Dr. Jones stated that the Greene County Career Center (GCCC) has officially started the Technology Education and Learning Support Program (TEALS). TEALS helps schools build and grow sustainable computer science programs through partnerships between teachers and volunteers.
    Jones announced that the GCCC received the JAG (Jobs for Alabama Graduates) National 6-of-6 Award. This accolade recognizes the highest achieving states, regions and programs within the JAG National Network. JAG Specialist, Shamyra Jones accepted the award at the JG National Conference in Las Vegas.
    The Career Center was also awarded a $28,000 state grant for program improvement. The grant will be used to equip the marketing school-based enterprise and update cosmetology tools.
    In his update on construction and renovation projects, Superintendent Jones reported the following: Eutaw Primary School roofing is 98% complete; Press box at Robert Brown Middle School is 80% complete, due to power issues, but should be operative by first home football game; The HVAC project at RBMS is 75% complete and scheduled to be completed early September; RBMS windows project is 85% complete; doors project is complete with 22 new doors installed; The inspection of the elevator at RBMS was delayed due to a problem with the panel box. Once the parts are in, Johnson Control will repair the panel box; Regarding GCHS roofing warranty, J&J Services has approved a purchase order to repair the HVAC issues.
    The board approved the following personnel items recommended by the superintendent.
    * Resignation: Jasmine Armstead, Science teacher – GCHS, effective August 7, 2024.
    * Employment for the 2024 – 2025 school year: Mary McMillian – Bus Aide – GCSS; Debra Waiters – Part-time Parent Facilitator – GCSS; Marva Smith – Long-term substitute (ACCESS) – GCHS; Carla Russell – Bus driver for mid-day CTE route from GCCC to RBMS.
    * Authorization of the following employees to work concessions and ticket booths for the 2024-2025 school year at the Greene County High School Principal’s discretion: LaTanya Cockrell; Tracey Hunter; Sarah Brewer; Twelia Morris; Sharon Washington; Mary Henderson; Wanda Gaitor; Jacqueline Edwards – Custodial Services.
    * Three-year contract for CSFO, Marquita Lennon, effective September 1, 2024.

    The board approved the following administrative items recommended by the superintendent.

    Purchase of a copier for central office from Dex Imaging in the amount of $14,590.
    CSFO Marquita Lennon presented the monthly financials as of July 31, 2024. In points of interest she noted that the school system has 5.17 months in combined general fund reserve; 4.78 months cash reserve. All bank accounts have been reconciled. The financial snapshot was as follows: general fund bank balance totaled $5,883,377.74 (reconciles to the summary cash report); accounts payable check register totaled $959,487.37; payroll register totaled $879,406.86 (total gross pay, to include employer match items); combined ending fund balance totaled $6,369,486.91. Local revenue sources included property taxes at $15, 995.41; sales taxes at $107,265.01; other taxes at $2,261.59. Local revenue totaled $125,522.01.

  • School Board approves resignations, employments and service contracts

    The Greene County Board of Education held a called meeting, Thursday, August 1, 2024, to act on personnel and administrative items relative to the opening of the new school term. As a special called meeting, the board could only address the items intended for the agenda. Board members present were Mr. Leo Branch, President; Mrs. Veronica Richardson, Vice President; Mr. Robert Davis, Member.
    The board approved the following personnel items recommended by Superintendent Dr. Corey Jones.

  • Superintendent’s 2024 overall evaluation indicates progress guided by eight standards

    The Greene County Board of Education, who had engaged consultant Dr. Daniel Boyd to conduct Superintendent Dr. Corey Jones’ annual evaluation, received the final report at a special meeting held Tuesday, June 25, 2024.
    According to Dr. Boyd, (former Assistant Superintendent, Alabama State Board of Education), eight Standards were utilized in the evaluation including Leadership and District Culture; Policy and Governance; Communications and Community Relations; Organizational Management; Curriculum Planning and Development; Instructional Management; and Values and Ethics of Leadership. The five data sources included Questions and Comments from board members, central office, administrators, and principals; Superintendent’s Self-assessment Questionnaire; Professional Development Plan; Internal Data Sources and External Data Sources.
    Board members’ evaluation summary results cited the following as Superintendent Jones’ areas of strength: Student and Staff Accomplishments; Consults with the board as necessary to handle the school district’s legal issues; Demonstrates good character and integrity. Three areas of weakness cited by the board included: Develops and nurtures relationships with community leaders; Works collaboratively with board to shape the district’s vision, mission and goals with measurable objectives and high expectations for student achievement; Available community resources are secured to help the school solve problems and achieve goals.
    Superintendent Jones evaluation questionnaire summary results from principals and central office administrators include the following: Areas of strength: Is an effective spokesperson for the District; Professional development promotes a focus on student learning consistent with the school district’s vision and goals; and reports to the school board the status of projected student achievement and instructional program effectiveness. Areas of weakness include: Monitors and evaluates progress and revises plans as needed; Develops positive staff morale and loyalty to the system; and recruits and assigns highly qualified personnel.
    Superintendent Jones evaluation summary indicated progress in six of the eight Standards, with an overall score of 3.77 on a scale of 5.0.
    Dr. Boyd recommended professional development for the superintendent in the areas of Vision, Culture and Leadership; and Communications and Community Relations.

  • Superintendent reports 90% of 3rd grade scholars scored at reading proficiency level

    Alabama Association of School Business Officials (AASBO) has selected Greene County CSFO, Mrs. Marquita Lennon to participate in the organization’s 2024 Leadership Program. The objective of AASBO Leadership is to develop future leaders in school business management to help improve the quality of education in Alabama and their respective communities. Mrs. Marquita Lennon was selected to be one of 12 CSFO’s out of 137 CSFO’s in the state of Alabama.

    The Greene County Board of Education held its regular session, Monday, May 20, 2024 with all members present along with Superintendent Dr. Corey Jones and CSFO Mrs. Marquita Lennon. In his report to the board, Dr, Jones stated that 90% of Eutaw Primary School 3rd grade scholars scored at reading proficiency level, a significant increase from the previous year. Jones noted that only 6 students did not score on proficiency level, out of 61 students, but they can enroll in summer school classes and retake the ACAP exam. “We have encouraged the parents to please get their children in summer school to prepare for another opportunity to move on to the 4th grade,” he said. Jones also explained that student scores in remaining grade levels will be released in June.
    Dr. Jones gave a special salute to Mrs. Marquita Lennon for her selection into the AASBO Leadership Program. He presented the following positive school news.
    Robert Brown Middle: Teacher and staff appreciation held May 6-10; Athletic Banquet held May 7 with scholars receiving certificates and trophies; Honors Program held May 8; May Day held May 10; 8th grade graduation held May 14, where Sheriff Jonathan Benison presented $150 Walmart gift cards to 65 eighth graders. ARLA presented tokens of appreciation to students in Math and Science.
    Greene County High: Senior Honors Day held May 1, acknowledging student scholarships from colleges and other organizations; Sheriff Jonathan Benison presented the following awards – Valediction received $15,000; Salutatorian received $10,000; student ranking third received $6,000; students ranking 4-11received $2,000; students ranking 12-50 received $1,000. GCHS graduation was held May 16.
    Greene County Career Center: Dr. Jones shared a video featuring students speaking about their experiences in Career Center programs. He noted that 10 Welding students graduated from Wallace Community College Selma, including 8 juniors and 2 seniors. Modern Manufacturing scholars participated in West Alabama Works Signing Day. Cosmetology Hair Show was held May 2. Onsite Facilities and Compliance Review completed May 17.
    School construction and Renovation Projects Update: New flooring and roof completed at Eutaw Primary School. All units and materials for the HVAC Project at RBMS have been delivered to the site. Mr. Otis Robinson agreed to clean up all debris at Peter J. Kirksey site at no cost.
    Dr. Jones reported that three new buses have been delivered and three additional buses are on order, which will provide air conditioned buses for all students. “ We also have a fleet renewal funding plan in place,” he stated.

  • School Board receives update on Superintendent Jones evaluation process

    The Greene County Board of Education met in regular session Monday, April 15, 2024 with all members present. The board heard an update on Superintendent Dr. Corey Jones evaluation process, conducted by Dr. Daniel Boyd, former Assistant Superintendent with the Alabama State Board of Education and former Superintendent of the Lowndes County School System. Dr. Boyd presented the board members with evaluation forms, to complete individually, using five performance standards. Dr. Boyd indicated that he will return on Wednesday to administer similar surveys to the administrative staff and principals. He asked the board members to have their surveys completed and returned to him by that date.
    Dr. Boyd stated that he will compile the findings of all surveys and present a final report on Superintendent Jones evaluation by June, 2024.
    Dr. Boyd noted that the superintendent’s annual evaluation process is significant in clarifying leadership roles; enhancing communications; creating a common understanding consisting of multiple sources of data and providing mechanisms of accountability.
    In his monthly report to the board, Superintendent Jones presented positive news for each school.
    Eutaw Primary: K-3 educators are currently participating in Reading Data meetings. Educators will analyze most recent progress, monitoring data and make instructional adjustments. All K-3 grade scholars will take the Aimsweb End-of-Year Assessment beginning April 29, 2024. The educators will participate in i-Ready/ACAP Practice Test Data meeting during week of April 22-24. They will review pertinent information prior to administering Diagnostic 3. ACAP testing has concluded at Eutaw Primary.
    Robert Brown Middle: 8th grade course selection cards completed April 4. ACAP testing completed. School wide Basketball Tournament scheduled for April 19. P.A.W.S. (Parents Always Willing to Support) meeting scheduled for April 30.
    Greene County High: Scholars attended Future Teachers Day at University of Alabama. Seniors attended WOW 2.0 held at Shelton State Community College, sponsored by Alabama Works. Mu Alpha Theta celebrated at OWA and Gulf Bowl Entertainment in Foley, Alabama.
    Greene County Career Center: Students participated in Modern Manufacturing Lear Corporation Industry Tour, March 14. Jobs for Alabama Graduates Career Closet dedicated. Students participated in Modern Manufacturing Hanna Steel Industry tour, March 27.

    Prior to the April meeting, the school board members participated in its annual Whole Board Training, Governing for Achievement, administered by Alabama Association of School Board staff. The first module of the five-part training focused on Committing to High Expectations, which has four expected outcomes: The board understands the high stakes of the Governing for Achievement programs work; The board feels a sense of urgency toward this work; The board understands the impact of quality teaching; The board understands the importance of building a culture of high expectations of all levels of the school system.

  • Board of Education receives two school buses; four additional buses still on back order

    The Greene County Board of Education received two of six new school buses ordered two years ago. The two 72 passenger, fully air conditioned buses arrived at the school bus shop, Friday, December 8. Superintendent Dr. Corey Jones said the four additional buses with same capacity and convenience are expected for delivery by May 2024. The buses have a price tag of $112,122 each. “This is an indication of the school system’s efforts to improve the comfort and safety in transporting students between home and school and other school related events,” Dr. Jones stated.
    The school board held its regular monthly meeting, Monday, Dec. 11, 2023, with three board members in attendance, including Mr. Leo Branch, Mr. Robert Davis and Mrs. Veronica Richardson.     In his report to the board, Dr. Jones gave updates on positive COVID cases reported from each school. The week of Nov. 12-18, RBMS reported two cases; GCHS reported one case. The week of Nov. 26 – Dec. 2, RBMS reported one case. The week of Dec. 3-9, no COVID cases were reported from the schools.
    In his school positive reports, Superintendent Jones noted that GCHS hosted a Community Block Party in which all the schools participated. GCHS Garden Club participated in Ag Exploration Day at Tuskegee University.
    Scholars from the Greene County Career Center visited UWÅ for a campus tour on Nov. 11.
    All welding booths, totaling 19, are installed and functional. Jag students visited Birmingham-Shuttlesworh International airport on Nov. 9. Military Mondays are held at the Career Center. The Army Reserve was the latest Service to visit the Center. Dual enrollment scholars had Friday presentations with the following guest speakers: Rodney Pelt, Mind Changers; Terrance Fletcher, Boss Ties, LLC; and Doug Fulghum, Extension Serve. The National Career Association had its Installation Ceremony. The GCCC received the Future Teacher Association grant.
    CSFO Mrs. Marquita Lennon presented the following Financial Snapshot as of November 30, 2023. Operating Reserve: 4.69 combined general fund reserve; 3.04 cash reserve; all bank accounts have been reconciled.   • Leo Branch continues as School Board President; Veronica Richardson as Vice President

    The Greene County Board of Education held is monthly meeting Monday, November 13, 2023 (one week early due to Thanksgiving Holiday), and conducted its annual reorganization process.
    As the first item of business, school board legal counsel, Attorney Hank Sanders, declared all board offices vacant and called for nominations for the position of President. When there was no immediate response, he urged the board members to act on his request. Board member Robert Davis suggested that the officers remain the same. Attorney Sanders asked for a motion to that effect. Board member Veronica Richardson nominated Mr. Leo Branch for Board President; Mr. Davis offered the motion, seconded by Mr. Merriweather. The motion carried. Mr. Davis nominated Ms. Richardson for Board Vice-President; Mr. Branch offered the motion and Mr. Davis seconded. The motion carried.
    The board’s monthly meeting schedule was not formally addressed, but it is assumed that the monthly meetings will continue on the third Monday at 4:30 pm at the Central Office.

    In his report to the board, Attorney Hank Sanders noted that at the August 28, 2023 board meeting, a board member voted on a personnel item in error. He recommended that the Superintendent offer to present the August 28 personnel items again without item E-4. Dr. Jones presented the amended personnel items and, following a motion and a second, the board voted approval. Dr. Jones then recommended approval of Personnel item E-4 from August 28, 2023 meeting. Davis offered the motion to approve; Merriweather offered the second. Branch, Davis and Merriweather voted for the motion; Dancy and Richardson abstained.

    Superintendent Jones gave an update on reported COVID cases in the schools, with only one case in the previous two weeks.   • School board holds work session with school principals highlighting scholars’ Road Map to Academic Success

    The Greene County Board of Education met in regular session, Monday, October 16, 2023 with all board members in attendance. Prior to the meeting the board held a work session, in the Central Office at 3:00 pm, with the principal of each school presenting her plans for student academic success. Summaries of these plans are presented following the report on school board actions.

    Principals Presentations at Board’s Work Session

    Eutaw Primary School Principal Brittany Harris began with the school’s Motto: Every Child, Every Day. Her presentation included the following:
    * Three Tiers of Classroom Instruction: Tier1 – Core Instruction; Tier 2 – Targeted Intervention; Tier 3 – Intensive Intervention.
    * Small Group Instruction: Small Group times are embedded into the Master Schedule. Educators must provide small group instruction to scholars, including Reading and Math Interventionists.
    * Coaching Support Reading: Kindergarten Team – Four Weeks Mini Coaching Cycle; First Grade – Six Weeks Coaching Cycle; Second Grade Team – Six Weeks Coaching Cycle; Third Grade – Four Weeks Mini Coaching Cycle.
    Principal Harris noted that a Math coaching Cycle is currently being modeled and will begin when completed.
    * Educators have analyzed scholars’ beginning of the year data. Data meetings are held during Extended Planning Times.
    * Professional Development include: S.P.I.R.E; ARI/OMI; ENVISION; I-READY and LETRS.
    * Academic Programs: After-School Tutorial with 155 scholars enrolled; Saturday School with 17 enrolled.
    * Parent meetings are held monthly.
    * Promoting Literacy: Book Vending Machine – scholars awarded with books for exhibiting excellent behavior.
    * Popping Sight words Challenge – Scholars reading 109 sight words correctly are awarded a prize.

    Robert Brown Middle School Principal Tammy Anderson opened her presentation with RBMS Mission and Motto: Mission is to provide a positive, safe, healthy, nursing and respectful environment in which scholars can learn and become productive members of society.Motto: The Harder We work, the Smarter We Get. She elaborated on the following:
    * Building Relationships: Administration Team, Faculty, Staff, Central Office, Board Members and Community Stakeholders; Teacher/Student/Parent Involvement; Join all relationships to ensure all students succeed.
    * Behavioral Plan: One-on One Counseling Sessions; Mental Health Coordinator on site and referrals; Good Character Plan with incentives; Peer tutoring; Full Support (4th – 8th Grades Administrative Team).
    * Reconstructing Greene County’s Future Generation of Leaders.

    Greene County High School Principal Andrea Perry opened her presentation with scholars’ ACT Data 2023 in Math and Reading and then discussed the following Next Steps.
    Math: 45.72 % – In Need of Support; 29.64 % – Close; 16.05 % – Ready; 8.58 % – Exceeding 24.63 %- Proficient.
    Reading: 36.04 % – In Need of Support; 33.58 % – Close; 17.29 % – Ready; 13.09 %- Exceeding.

    Next Steps:
    The Math Specialist will support and work closely with math educators 
* Educators will participate in Instructional Rounds where they observe their colleagues and offer feedback 
* The administrators will do walk-throughs and visit classrooms on a daily basis
* The district will observe classrooms, mentor, and support educators
* Educators will participated in on-going embedded Professional Development
* Scholars will work on Pathway from I-Ready Benchmark Assessment at a minimum of thirty minutes per week. 
* Alabama Rural Learning Accelerator (ARLA) will collaborate and work with math teachers 1st and 2nd periods to help improve ninth grade math skills. Educators from UAB will work virtually with scholars for four days a week and face-to-face once a week. Power hours will be offered once a week during homeroom. Power hour is also intervention for the ninth graders. 
* We will analyze data from Pre-ACT. Our focus will be on scholars who are closed and in need of support. Those scholars will participate in ACT Prep, Math and Reading Intervention, and After-School Tutoring. ACT Consultants will be working with scholars throughout the school year. 
* Educators will implement ACT Bellringers  (Mastery Prep) every day. 
* Math educators will implement intervention time the last fifteen minutes of each class period. Educators will work with small groups.
* The PE educators will allow students to work on IXL one day out of the week. 
* IXL ( I EXCEL)is a program that helps high school students at all levels learn math, reading, and english more effectively. IXL stands for Innovation, Excellence, and Leadership.
* All eleventh graders will have a free online ACT Prep account from the ALSDE
* Incentives will be provided for scholars who benchmark on ACT and WorkKeys.
* Students will also attend After School tutorial to focus on ACT standards.
* ACT BootCamp will also be offered one Saturday out of the month.
* ACT Practice test will be administered throughout the school year.
    Superintendent Dr. Jones’ report highlighted many of the points presented in the principals’ presentation, for example Saturday School and the Book Vending Machine at EPS. RBMS will hold Conflict Resolution Workshops for 7th and 8th grade scholars. GCHS chartered a Science National Honor Society. He also noted that the CSFO Ms. Marquita Lennon would not present a financial report at this meeting. “We are in closeout at this time. The October and November financial reports will be presented at the next board meeting,” he said.

  • Superintendent gives update on HVAC replacement RBMS; summer maintenance work; administrative contracts approved

    The Greene County Board of Education held its monthly meeting on June 12, 2023 with all board members present. Superintendent Dr. Corey Jones opened his report with an update on the HVAC Project commencing at Robert Brown Middle School. At a special call meeting on May 8, 2023, the board entered into an agreement with Whorton Engineering, Inc. for the replacement of the entire Heating and Cooling system at RBMS at a cost of $2.5 million. Dr. Jones stated that Whorton Engineering has performed onsite observations and documentations of all HVAÇ equipment located at the main building. The company has also done a 3D Laser Scan of the building to verify field conditions. Jones noted that this is critical since there are no existing drawings of the facility. The company also completed a scan of the gym. Whorton Engineering has submitted current delivery dates for equipment and materials from proposed vendors. Financial support for the HVAC Project at RBMS is secured through the ESSER (Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Fund) – CARES ACT which is the Coronavirus Aid Relief & Economic Security Act, resources
    In Positive news from Robert Brown Middle School, Jones said that students in the after-school tutorial program visited the Georgia Aquarium. The school held its fun day May 19. Summer Learning Program began May 23 with 90 students registered.
    Greene County High Positive News included Ms. Victoria Moore, Physics and Chemistry teacher receiving a $1,000 classroom grant from the Southern Company.
    Dr. Jones gave summer maintenance updates on the various schools. At Eutaw Primary School all tasks were completed except for installing cut off valves. All maintenance work at RBMS was completed. Maintenance tasks at Greene County High School will be completed by June 23 and tasks at the career Center will be completed by June 27.

  • School year ends with scholars engaging in multiple activities

    The Greene County Board of Education held it regular monthly meeting, Monday, May 15, 2023, with all board members present. Superintendent Dr. Corey Jones began his report to the board with the Positive News of each school. He noted that across the district, all principals are engaged in leadership professional development focusing on instructional practices. He reported that all Spring State Assessments have been completed. Relating to Greene County High School, Dr. Jones stated the it has been recognized as a Chapter Member of the Alabama Junior Academy of Science by Samford University. Students are encouraged to apply for scholarships, participate in competitions and attend the science camps sponsored by Samford University.
    In collaboration with CDC, the Youth Advisory Committee Team at GCHS will host the Minding Your Mental Fair on Wednesday, May 24 from 5-7 pm. GCHS 9th and 10th graders enjoyed an evening of fun at the Sneakers Ball on April 15. The high school prom was held April 21 with the theme: Golden Dreams. At College and Career Decision Day, held May 1, seniors shared their plans after high school.
    On May 10, five scholars from Greene County Career Center graduated in Welding from Wallace Community College Selma. They are 11th grade students who received their Associate Degrees in Welding before graduating high school.
    Dr. Christopher Crawford, a graduate of Greene County High School, works with scholars to build physiological computing applications. Dr. Crawford is conducting a study designed to help software developers understand ways to create future educational applications.
    Positive News from Robert Brown Middle School highlighted the Creative Girls Rock, with girls grades 5-8, participating in the end of year brunch and activities on June3, 2023. The Young Teens Asthma Wellness Virtual Camp is designed to help students recognize the triggers, discuss feelings and understand the basics of asthma. Participants will receive camp gear for healthy eating and monitoring exercises. On May 11, the after school tutorial program visited the Georgia aquarium.
    Eutaw Primary School held Honors Day for various classes: Kindergarten, May 15; First Grade, May 16; Second Grade, May 17; Third Grade, May 18. Pre-K end of year celebration is scheduled for May 19.

    The combined General Fund Reserve total 5.05M; Cash Reserve totaled 2.86M; (All bank accounts have been reconciled); General Fund Bank balance – $3,427,655.81; Accounts Payable Check register – $286,934.04; Payroll Register – $933,558.23; Combined Ending fund Balance – $6,101,091.19. Local revenue: Property Taxes – $60,694; Sales Taxes – $133,729; Other Taxes – $3,971; Bingo – $55,839; total Local revenue – $254,233. The board also approved FY 2023 Budget Amendments from categories including ESSER II, ESSER III, CNP, UAB COVID Grant, and Cyber Security.
